About Me

Hello there! I’m Kami, and I graduated from Abbotsleigh in 2024 with 1st in Physics, an Honour prize for being top 20 of the cohort and as the inaugural recipient of the Innovations in Science and Technology prize at my valedictorian assembly. In year 12, I was also elected as the school’s STEM prefect and active member of numerous school councils.

But here I’m going to share with you a secret I’ve kept for many years until now, something I was embarrassed to tell even my closest friends at school: In Year 7, I failed the school entrance exam and only got into Abbotsleigh by pure luck when a spot became open.

When I got in, I had to work really hard to keep up with everyone else’s pace. I attended every science and maths tutorial and did as many practice questions as I could, but my grades didn’t go up. All of my teachers could see how hard I was working, but without any improvement in results; some had tried to convince me to take it easy. At one point, I almost gave up. Maybe, I thought, I’d already reached my limit. Maybe I just had to accept my average grades…

It wasn’t until the start of year 10 that I discovered the secret to doing well in any subject. And it really wasn’t as hard or time consuming as I had initially thought – I was spending half the amount of time I used to spend on every subject, and achieving higher results than I had ever done before!

Owing to my new approach to studying, over the course of my high school career, I’ve topped almost every subject at the end of the year, including History, English Advanced, Maths Advanced, Biology and Latin. And in Year 12, I placed top of Physics.

When I did my Maths Advanced HSC in Year 11 as an accelerated student, I only completed one past paper and managed to get a result of 98/100. It took me a while to realise that doing loads of questions and past papers wasn’t the most efficient way of getting better marks. And this applies to every subject you might do at school.

Whether you’re a student working hard to achieve your goal, but your efforts aren’t 100% being converted into those top marks, or you’re a bit lost on your learning journey and could use some guidance, as long as you have the drive and determination to do well, all you need is the right tools to succeed in your HSC!
